rhuddlwm gawr Witchcraft and Wicca and Doreen Valiente

A EULOGY

We feel that warmth and color is more appropriate to express our feelings toward someone we respected and admired, and who has passed away.

Doreen Valiente has gone to the Summerland.

Doreen Valiente, Queen of the Witches

At 06.55 am BST on Wednesday 1st September 1999, Doreen Valiente passed over to the Summer Land in her home town of Brighton, England.    Doreen was one of the founders of the fastest growing religion in the Western World: WICCA.  Through her writings, hundreds of thousands across the world have been introduced to the Goddess and God, and have found relevance in the Old Religion and the concepts of Wicca and Witchcraft.  She brought love, knowledge and power to many people.

Those who met her, found her warm, friendly and open, not to mention astoundingly humble about her status in the Pagan community.  While many seekers claimed to be taught by their grandmothers, and collected initiations like stamps,  Doreen would never call herself 'Queen of the Witches'.    When speaking at the Pagan Federation Conference in 1997, she was amazed that over 1000 people packed the hall just to hear her!

Throughout her life, Doreen asked all seekers of the Craft, just to explore the precepts of Witchcraft and Wicca and thereby discover their hidden knowledge.    The only requirement she asked for their becoming a Witch, was to conquer their fear of becoming enlightened!!

This page is dedicated to her kindness and her generosity.

When I met Doreen in 1991, she impressed me because, although it was short notice, and she didn't know me, she took time out of a busy schedule to sit and talk with a curious American.   She didn't ask me what lineage or tradition I had been initiated into.  She just asked if I was a Witch. ...Rhuddlwm Gawr, Elder, Church of Y Dynion Mwyn

Doreen, more than any other Witch alive today embodied the essence of the Craft.  But, she would not want a fuss being made just because her spirit has gone to Summerland.  "Doreen, I am in my forty's but I want to grow up to be just like you."  ...an associate, Elder and Director Bangor Institute

She was a great woman... my friend... a wonderful scholar... she taught me much... and she was warm and welcoming and whether on the phone or in person, it was a real delight to talk with her.  I have lost a true friend.
....Judith Lewis VP Sales and Marketing New Moon (Enterprises) Ltd

Doreen, wherever you are, thank you for making my religion available to me.  "ABCs of Witchcraft" was my introduction to this wonderful religion of ours.  The name of Doreen Valiente shall be as a pagan shield against the ravages of time and space....Linda Zacchao, Universal Federation of Pagans

Not only was she responsible for Wicca's early growth, but she created the beautiful liturgy of poetry and ritual, which most wiccans refer to today when they obtain their first Book of Shadows:

"I am the Gracious Goddess, who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man. Upon earth, I give
the knowledge of the spirit eternal; and beyond death, I give peace and freedom and reunion with those who have gone before."
(from 'The Charge of the Goddess' by Doreen Valiente)

"Come yea as the charm is made!  Queen of heaven, Queen of hell, Horned Hunter of the night
Lend your power unto the spell, And work our will by magic rite!
By all the power of land and sea, By all the might of moon and sun I call the Earth to bind my spell.  Air to speed it well. Bright as Fire shall it glow. Deep as tide of Water flow. Count the elements fourfold, In the fifth the spell shall
hold."

Doreen Valiente "Witchcraft for Tomorrow"; Phoenix Publishing 1985

"Goodbye Doreen, say hello to Gerald for us and thank you.  You will be sadly missed by all. " ...Rhuddlwm Gawr

A simple family service will take place in the next few days.  Doreen requested that anyone wishing to send flowers should instead send a donation to the Centre For Pagan Studies of which she was Patron, and that a list of those kind enough to send money should have their names published and a book of commemorative letters should be displayed at the Centre.

We are asking everyone that is going to burn a candle for Doreen, make it a purple one and anoint it with patchouli oil.

Please respect her wishes for the privacy of those she has left behind at this time.   There will be requiem service in the future organized by John Belham-Payne either at the Centre or somewhere in London.  Those that would like to attend 'A Day For Doreen' should send a stamped addressed envelope to:

The Centre For Pagan Studies, c/o The Old Oast, Underhill, Maresfield, East Sussex. TN22 3AY England.
