VALERIAN

Also known as All-Heal, Amantilla, Bloody Butcher, Capons Trailer,
Cats Valerian, English Valerian, Fragrant Valerian, Garden Heliotrope, Phu, Red
Valerian, St. Georges Herb, Sete Wale, Set Well, and Vandal Root. It is considered a
Feminine plant, of the planet Venus and the element Water.
It has powers in love, sleep, purification, and protection. It is so strong, that Cunningham urges against
driving while under the effects of it taken internally.
According to Cunningham, the root of this herb can be hung in the home to
guard against lightning strike, used powdered in protective sachets or placed in pillows
to aid in falling asleep, despite its bad odor. A
sprig of the plant pinned to a womans clothing will cause men to follow her
like children. It may also be used to
dispel a quarrel. The Greeks used it as a
window charm to keep evil away. The powdered
root is sometimes used as Graveyard Dust.
|
Valerian is indigenous in Britain, where two species are found,
V. officinalis and V. dioica, however V. officinalis is the one referred to in medicine
and magick.
