Narcissus

This spring blooming flower comes in a myriad of colors and styles, all having the basic star shaped blossom.

In greek Mythology, the narcissus was dedicated to Hades, God of the Underworld, and his queen Persephone. In the Hymn to Persephone's mother, Demeter, Hades asks Zues for Persephone's hand in marriage. Together with Gaia, the Earth Goddess, Hades and Zues plot to capture the young maiden from her mother, who would hate for Persephone to become Queen of the Dead and be seperated from her for eternity. Gaia conspires to create a blossom more beautiful than all others to snare the young girl while she is out picking flowers. A giant Narcissus rose from the glade in which Persephone rested, and when Persephone reached out to pluck the bloom, Hades chariot burst through the earth, dragging her down the chasm to the Underworld.

In Roman Mythology, the symology of this myth is transfered to Pluto and Prosperpine, King and Queen of the Dead.

A secondary myth of the Narcissus's origin tells the tragic story of an arrogant Greek named Narcissus, a ravishingly gorgeous youth who spurned all suitors, as none matched his own beauty. However, he was destined to come by a spring on the heights of Mount Helicon. When he reached for a drink he saw his reflection in the water and immediately fell in love with what he thought was the most beautiful water nymph he had ever seen. Refusing to leave her side, he wasted away there, and became the flower Narcissus which always bows down its head to its own image in the water at its feet.

The Sword of Dynion Mwyn

The Sword provides news, views, and other information primarily of and for the students, members and friends of The Welsh Tradition of Dynion Mwyn and selected members of the International Pagan Community. The Sword is the official journal of the Church of Dynion Mwyn, and has a section which is devoted to the Southeastern Pagan Alliance (SEPA). We are primarily interested in news of topical interest, and articles pertaining to Witchcraft, Wicca, the Occult and Paganism. Deadline for the Beltane, 2005 issue is April 1, 2005. All submissions must include legal name and address. Names will be withheld or magickal names substituted on request. Subscription lists, names, addresses, etc. are not given out or sold. The Sword of Dynion Mwyn may mail advertisements on behalf of approved advertisers. All news and articles should be submitted by the 1st of the month proceeding the issue date.

The Sword is published at the eight sacred festivals of the year during the months of: December, February, March, May, June, August, September, and November.
